Introducing the Taxonomy Submenu Block for WordPress Navigation

The Navigation block in Gutenberg has made menu management simpler than ever. However, for sites that rely heavily on taxonomies—such as categories for blogs, tags for products, or custom groupings—keeping menus updated can still be a repetitive task. Every time a new term is added, the menu has to be manually adjusted, which creates room for errors and slows down publishing workflows.

To solve this, we built the Taxonomy Submenu Block, a lightweight WordPress plugin that brings dynamic, taxonomy-powered submenus to the Navigation block.

Choose Any Taxonomy with Ease

Instead of manually creating submenu items, editors can choose a taxonomy from the block settings. Whether it’s the default Categories, Tags, or a custom taxonomy, the block generates the entire submenu automatically. This gives editors complete flexibility while ensuring consistency across the site.

Submenus That Update Themselves

The biggest advantage of this block is that submenus never go out of date. As soon as a new term is added to the selected taxonomy, it appears instantly in the navigation. This automation saves time, reduces the chance of broken menus, and keeps visitors connected to the latest sections of your site.

Built for Gutenberg

Because it’s built as a native block, the Taxonomy Submenu Block integrates seamlessly with the WordPress Site Editor. It feels like part of the editor itself rather than an add-on. We also tested it extensively with all the popular themes, so the design matches perfectly with its visual style and works across devices without extra adjustments.

Lightweight and User-Friendly

There are no complicated settings or external dashboards to manage. The block lives right inside the Navigation interface, so editors can configure it in the same workflow they already use. This simplicity makes it accessible to anyone familiar with Gutenberg, while keeping the plugin lightweight and performant.

Why It Matters

Dynamic menus are especially powerful for large or frequently updated sites. Blogs, news portals, eCommerce stores, and membership sites can all benefit from taxonomy-driven navigation. By removing the need for manual menu management, the Custom Submenu Block improves editorial efficiency and ensures that site visitors always see the most up-to-date content structure.
